Starting a Self-Directed Creative Project (Visual Arts & Design Focus)

  • This four-week course provides insight and practical guidance on initiating a self-directed creative project and transforming an idea into a cohesive body of work.  Many creatives get excited by an idea and start personal projects with enthusiasm, only to struggle with maintaining momentum because they are uncertain about the next steps. Through structured exercises and a clear framework, this course supports participants in successfully launching their projects and sustaining their creative process through to completion. 

    Week 1: Project Launch & Problem Statement

    Focus: Defining the creative challenge and setting a strong foundation.

    Topics:

    ·       Understanding personal motivation and creative goals

    ·       Understanding personal style and artistic voice

    • What makes a compelling visual project?

    • Defining a problem or concept statement for your project (theme, message, or design challenge)

    Week 2: How & Why We Research

    Focus: Gathering insights and inspiration to inform the project.

    Topics:

    • Visual and conceptual research methods (artist studies, reading and trend analysis)

    • The role of research in creative problem-solving

    • How to balance inspiration with originality

    Week 3: Evaluating and Refining

    Focus: Evaluating progress, refining ideas, and making adjustments.

    Topics:

    • Self-assessment techniques for creative work

    • Identifying strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth

    • Receiving and implementing feedback effectively

    Week 4: Final Presentation & the Iterative Process

    Focus: Creating a refined outcome and understanding iteration.

    Topics:

    • The iterative cycle in design and visual arts

    • Testing and refining ideas through multiple versions

    • Finalizing work and preparing for presentation
